英文詞類依英文單字在句子裡的功用分成八類，常被稱之為:英文八大詞類。
台灣的英語教學著重在考試，考單字時通常以測驗單字意義為主，但其實提升文法能力很重要的一環就是了解英文八大詞類，然後了解每個字的詞性或是學習每個單字的不同的詞性變化，才可以精準的使用並將其放在正確的位置上。
像是我們以「我朋友說了一口流利的韓文」這句話來當例子，用fluent的各詞性型態來造句，你可以怎麼說呢?
My friend speaks fluent Korean.
fluent 形容詞，用來形容korean.
My friend speaks Korean fluently.
fluently副詞，用來修飾speak korean這件事
My friend speaks Korean with great fluency.
fluency是名詞，搭配形容詞great來表達能流利的說韓文這件事。
有沒有發現到英文八大詞類的重要性了呢? 下面我們就來看看各詞性的說明及使用方式吧~
名詞可以是一個人、地方、想法或是一件事務，像是child、Cebu、 Japan、 mall、 love。認識名詞時要搞清楚是否可數，可數名詞如:apple、book，不可數名詞如:milk、fire，可數名詞按照單/複數在前面要加上a/an/the，後面要加上s/es，像是an apple / apples。然後，以添加 ‘s 來來變成所有格表示擁有，像是 Zoe’s toy( Zoe的玩具 )。
名詞有兩種：專有名詞和普通名詞。專有名詞始終以大寫字母開頭，例如QQEnglish、Taipei、Fancebook。普通名詞在句子中用小寫字母寫即可，例如，boy、chocolate、 food、pen、 school。
此外，名詞在句子中可以扮演不同的角色； 例如，名詞可以是主詞、受詞、補語或同位語。

代名詞按字面上意思來說就用來代替名詞的詞，像是，He、we、 they、 it、 myself、 himself。
我們用代名詞替換前面已經提過的名詞，被稱為代名詞。以例句「My sister is a high school student. She go to school by bus.」來說，前句用我妹妹，已經知道是女生，後面我們就用she來替換，讓句子簡單不累贅。
代名詞按定義可以大概分成以下幾種類型：人稱代名詞用於指特定的人(I, my, your, his, she, it, its, we, they, their..)，所有格代名詞用於強調所有權( mine, yours, his, hers, its, ours, theirs)，反身代名詞用於強調另一個名詞或代名詞(myself, ourselves, herself, themselves..)， 指示代名詞(this, that, these)，讓人頭痛的關係代名詞( who, whom, whose, which, that)，不定代名詞(all, any, each, another..)等代名詞種類。

動詞是表達動作或存在的詞，例如：eat, is, talk, sleep。許多句子包含主要動詞和助動詞(台灣教學中多把be動詞特別分出來)。例句:He can cook.他會做飯。- cook是主要動詞，can是助動詞。
動詞必須與其主詞在單複數型態相吻合，像是They speak English/ He speaks English。動詞變化有規則或不規則的，在學習的時候要細心的記下來，且動詞也用變化來表達時態及語氣，可說是句子中最有趣的部份了！

形容詞是用來修飾或描述名詞或代名詞，是讓句子生動起來不可或缺的部分，像是：large, blue, old, many, high

副詞用來修飾或描述動詞、形容詞或其他副詞，通常以-ly結尾。例：happily, often, silently, well
形容詞僅修飾名詞，副詞則可以描述或修飾句子中的動詞、形容詞或其他副詞，且副詞通常可以回答何時、何地、如何、為什麼或是在什麼條件下或程度。

介系詞是放在名詞或代名詞之前的詞，用來表示前面的名詞跟其他字詞的關係，常用作表示空間、時間等例：on, at, top, beside, in（on the table, at school, top of the world, next to the book, in the box, at 6 o’clock）

什麼是連接詞？ 它是一個將單詞、片語或子句連接起來的詞，例：and, but, because, for, so
有兩大類型的連接詞：對等和從屬連接詞。對等連接詞將相等的元素連接起來，有：and, but, or, nor, for, so, yet，從屬連詞連接則不相等的子句，有：because, although, while, since。
